Marketplace safety

Trade with confidence.

Simple checks that reduce risk before you meet, pay, sell, or place a bid.

Effective 29 August 2026

Before you buy

  • Review the business name, verification indicators, trust score, listing age, price, and product description together.
  • Ask for current photos or a short live video when condition or ownership is unclear.
  • Compare the price with similar products. Treat extreme discounts and artificial urgency as warning signs.

Meeting and inspection

  • Meet during daylight in a busy public place or an established business location.
  • Bring someone with you for high-value items and tell a trusted person where you are going.
  • Inspect serial numbers, receipts, functionality, ownership documents, and material faults before payment.

Payment and account safety

  • Never share a password, email code, SMS code, WhatsApp code, NIN, card PIN, or banking token with a buyer or seller.
  • Confirm money in your own bank or payment account. Do not rely on screenshots or forwarded alerts.
  • Do not pay a deposit merely because someone claims another buyer is waiting.

Auctions

Read the complete listing and decide your maximum price before bidding. A valid bid is a serious offer. Do not bid on behalf of a seller, coordinate bids, or use multiple accounts to influence the price.

Report a problem

Stop communicating if you suspect fraud. Preserve the listing URL, messages, account name, payment evidence, and relevant screenshots. Report the listing to safety@makett.com.ng. For financial fraud or immediate danger, contact your bank and the appropriate Nigerian authorities promptly.

Consumer rights

Businesses must use clear, accurate descriptions and transparent pricing. Nigerian consumer-protection rights continue to apply. You can learn more or submit a consumer complaint through the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.
